040 - the art room 29.01.07

John-Paul walks into the common room and takes a seat. Craig walks in from the other direction and the freeze as they see each other.
John-Paul: You were here first. I’ll go.
Craig: Yeah, good.
John-Paul starts to go before steeling himself and turning back
John-Paul: No, Craig. I need to explain.
Craig (walking out): I don’t want to listen.
John-Paul: At least give me the chance to tell you what this is all about. You’re gonna have to listen to me at some stage. (They both look around them to see if people are listening.) Not here, alright, but please listen to what I’ve got to say and then you can walk away.
Craig nods. They find an art room that is emptying of students
John-Paul: We can talk in here.
Craig (closing the door): I don’t wanna do this.
John-Paul: Craig, it’ll only take a second…..
Craig: Don’t you get it?! I am not interested alright, you’re wasting your time.
John-Paul: I understand that you’re angry.
Craig (sarcastically): Thanks!
John-Paul: Don’t you think I’m angry with myself for what I said?!
Craig: I don’t care how you feel! You don’t go around saying things like that.
John-Paul (sitting down): Yeah, I know what I said was wrong, alright, but I felt ……we’re friends aren’t we?
Craig: We’re not.
John-Paul: Okay.
Craig: We’re not.John-Paul: Yeah, okay. If that’s your decision, I accept it because I know I’ve ruined us as mates. (Crying) Craig, have you got any idea how bad I feel about myself right now? (Craig has barely looked at John-Paul throughout this. His body language is tense and when John-Paul moves towards him, he moves away.) Eh? I mean I hate myself for what I’ve done! I’m disgusted. (Craig doesn’t move) But that’s it, alright? From now on, I’ll stay out of your life.
Craig: What?

John-Paul: Yeah. I’ll stay away from you, I’ll stay away from everyone, alright, I’m leaving!
Craig (stopping John-Paul leaving by putting his hand on the door): So, you’re just going to take the coward’s way out?
John-Paul: Get your hand off the door, Craig.
Craig: What am I going to tell people when they ask why we’re not talking?
John-Paul: They won’t even care, I won’t be here!
John-Paul tries the door but Craig won’t let him passJohn-Paul: Get away…..
Craig: I don’t want you to go! (Banging on the door) I don’t want you to go! I still want you as a mate.
John-Paul: Are you serious?

Craig (trying to stop his emotions): Yeah. You’re the best mate I’ve ever had. And that’s the way I want it to stay.

Later. Things are calmer now. Craig is sitting down and John-Paul is pacing the room.
John-Paul:Its good that we can stay mates and thanks for that and I promise that I’ll never say what I did again.
Craig: Alright. Okay.
John-Paul: And I think so long as I keep you as a mate, I can just forget about the feelings that I had for you. (Craig looks skeptical) It’s okay, I can do it.
Craig: What, you can just switch off like that?
John-Paul: Yeah, I mean, they weren’t there to begin with, were they? You know, so we’ll just go back to how things were. Just mates.
Craig: Okay.
John-Paul: And I can handle it. And I’ll stick with Hannah as well.
Craig: You’re gonna carry on with her?
John-Paul (trying to convince himself as well as Craig): Yeah, yeah, she’s great and I really really like her. Craig can’t believe this and rubs the back of his neck before getting up

Craig: Look, are you…..are you sure about this?
John-Paul: Yeah, yeah I can do it.
He smiles and they both agree on an uneasy truce - neither of them ready to acknowledge the feelings they both know they have for each other.

Later in the day. The boys meet the girls and everything seems like before.
Hannah tries to get Craig and Sarah back together. She's really just trying to help them. But she can't expect Craig to forgive Sarah as quick. And JP can't stand the image of Craig and Sarah kissing, while Hannah huges him and seems happy.
