002 - the day after 07.09.06

7. 09. 06 At school. Craig is leaning over some railings when he sees John Paul.

CRAIG: You’re taking a risk, aren’t you?
JOHN PAUL: (not looking up) Doing what?
CRAIG: Sitting there, surrounded by fire alarms. You think you can control yourself? Why’d you do it?
JOHN PAUL: I told you, I didn’t like the odds.
CRAIG: You could have stood up for me in person.
JOHN PAUL: (he looks up) What, and fight your battles for you? Besides, my way was smarter.
CRAIG: Not if you got caught.
JOHN PAUL: I didn’t though, did I?
CRAIG: Thanks anyway.
Craig walks into the classroom.
CRAIG: When I left I thought that was it. End of an era. Yet here I am, back in this dump. Surrounded by a bunch of kids.
John Paul gets up suddenly, gathering up his books.
CRAIG: What’s the matter?
JOHN PAUL: I’m going to go and find Sonny, see if he wants someone to hold his coat for him while he gives you a good kicking.
CRAIG: What’s got into you?
JOHN PAUL: You don’t want to be here, all right? We get it. But you are, and the reason is that you messed up, so why don’t you just stop acting like you’re better than everyone else when you’re not.
CRAIG: Sorry.
JOHN PAUL: Don’t worry about it.
CRAIG: Do you want to hear something even more pathetic? The truth is, I used to really look forward to going to school.
JOHN PAUL: Yeah? (he sits on the edge of one of the desks)
CRAIG: Yeah. If you knew my family you’d understand why. I have two sisters, both drama queens, a curse inherited from my mother. Then there’s my brother…
JOHN PAUL: The one who ran over Sonny Valentine’s mum.
CRAIG: The Judge said it was an accident. Sonny disagrees.
JOHN PAUL: Just stay out of his way.
CRAIG: I’ll keep that in mind. What you doing in here?
JOHN PAUL: I like the quiet.
CRAIG: Is that it?
JOHN PAUL: Yeah. That and I don’t want to mess my exams up like some people.
CRAIG(angry): It wasn’t as simple as not putting the work in! Things were going on! You’ve got no idea.
JOHN PAUL: You’re right. I’m sorry. I just want to pass my exams so I can get out of here.
CRAIG: Where do you want to go?

JOHN PAUL: The States. Australia. Anywhere.

CRAIG: I’ve always wanted to drive coast to coast in America.
JOHN PAUL: Me too. Although it turns out you need a licence. There’s a law or something.
CRAIG: You think I fail every exam I take?

He holds out his wallet, showing John Paul his driving licence.

JOHN PAUL: Cool. You got a car then?
CRAIG: No, er, not as such.
JOHN PAUL: Still, nice photo.
CRAIG: You eaten yet?
JOHN PAUL: No, why?
CRAIG: Well, I’m going to the canteen if you’re hungry?
JOHN PAUL: Okay.
John Paul gets up and they both head out of the classroom.
CRAIG: So you like the quiet, eh?
JOHN PAUL: You not met my sisters?

JP and Craig meet Sonny's sister, Sasha. Craig turns away, looking uncomfortable
JOHN PAUL: You all right?
CRAIG: Yeah.
JOHN PAUL: What happened weren’t your fault, you know. Even Sonny’s gotta figure that out at some point.
CRAIG: Yeah, well somehow I doubt it.
